12.6. Replacement of back brake shoes on drum brakes

GENERAL INFORMATION

Rear view of early type of assembly of Bendix brake shoes

Front view of early type of assembly of Bendix brake shoes

Late type of brake shoes of a brake like Bendix established on a brake board

And – a front brake shoe,

In – a back brake shoe,

With – the lower point of turn of blocks,

F – regulator rack mechanism,

1 – top returnable spring,

2 – lower returnable spring,

3 – fastening pin, spring and head,

4 – spring

Prevention

It is obligatory to make replacement of all blocks on one axis of the car even if the limit of wear was reached by one block.

During the work of brake shoes brake dust which contains asbestos, unhealthy is formed. Therefore when cleaning brake shoes not to use compressed air and not to inhale dust.

ALL MODELS

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. To lift the car and to remove a back wheel.
2. To unscrew a bolt of fastening of a drum and to remove it.
3. Being careful, to remove the dust formed from wear of brake shoes from the brake drum, a brake board and blocks.
4. To measure thickness of brake slips in several points and in case slips in any point are worn-out to minimum admissible limit or are polluted by oil, to replace brake shoes.

BENDIX BRAKES

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. On early models to disconnect block clamp springs from a brake board of a drum brake, using the tool, similar shown on a photo. The tool can be manufactured independently, using the screw-driver with a cut in an edge.
2. To push the special tool in the center of a spring and to unhook a spring hook from a brake board.
3. On later models, using flat-nose pliers, to remove block spring clamp heads, pressing and turning them on 90 °.
4. After removal of heads to lift springs and to take clamp pins.
5. By means of the lever to remove brake shoes from their lower holder on a brake disk.
6. To remove the lower taking-away spring.
7. To wring out both blocks from the wheel brake cylinder and to remove them. At the same time not to damage boots.
8. To disconnect a cable of the drive of the emergency brake from a brake shoe. For prevention of drop-out of pistons of the working brake cylinder to fix pistons by the corresponding elastic band or a wire.
9. To note an arrangement of details of the regulator of brake shoes, to remove the lever of the drive of the emergency brake and to disconnect the fixing regulator bolt spring from a lobby (on an arrangement) a brake shoe.
10. To disconnect the top returnable spring, to separate a front brake shoe and a returnable spring from a back brake shoe.
11. To disconnect the spring fixing the regulator to a back brake shoe.
12. To replace all returnable springs irrespective of their state.
13. To install the lever of the emergency brake on a new brake shoe and to fix it by a new bracket of fastening.
14. To take a regulator bolt from a rack and to carefully investigate a rack on wear and damages.

Prevention

The left and right racks are not interchangeable and designated by "G" and "D" respectively. Rack regulator bolts are also not interchanged; the left bolt of a rack has the left carving, and the right bolt the right carving.

15. It is correct to place the regulator.
16. To check that all elements on the end of a rack are correctly placed, then to apply lubricant with high temperature of melting on a regulator bolt carving.
17. To screw a regulator wheel on a bolt so that between a ring and a head of a bolt there was a small gap, and to establish a bolt in a rack.
18. To establish a returnable spring on back (on an arrangement) a brake shoe so that shorter hook of a spring connected to a block.
19. To establish an adjusting level by the end of a spring.
20. To insert an adjusting level into a groove in a back brake shoe.
21. To establish the top returnable spring on a back brake shoe.
22. To establish the second end of a spring on a front brake shoe and moving, to arrange a forward block so that the head of an adjusting bolt settled down in a flute.
23. After that to insert a hook of the fixing spring into a groove on a front brake shoe.
24. To raise rubber protective covers of the brake cylinder and to check the working brake cylinder for leak of brake fluid.
25. To clear details of a back brake.
26. To apply lubricant with high temperature of melting on places of contact of blocks with a brake board.
27. To check that the lever of the emergency brake is located opposite to an edge of a back brake shoe and to remove the elastic band fixing pistons in the brake cylinder.
28. To stretch brake shoes and to establish their top ends on the piston of the working brake cylinder.
29. To connect a cable of the emergency brake to the lever of the emergency brake located on a back brake shoe.
30. To establish the lower returnable spring on both brake shoes and to establish the lower part of brake shoes on a support of blocks.
31. Moving brake shoes, to center them in relation to a brake board.
32. To establish pins of a clamp of a block, a spring and a head of fastening of a spring.
33. Using the screw-driver, to turn a wheel of an adjusting level so that to unclench brake shoes to a contact of the brake drum.
34. To install the brake drum.
35. To make replacement of brake shoes on the second back wheel.
36. After replacement of brake shoes to adjust a gap between them and the brake drum for what several times to press a brake pedal. When pressing a pedal, during the normal work of an adjusting level, the clicks published by an adjusting level have to be heard.
37. To check and if it is necessary, to adjust the emergency brake.
38. To check the level of brake fluid in system.

GIRLING BRAKES

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. To note an arrangement of springs and a rack of the regulator, for repeated correct assembly (the arrow specifies the direction of rotation of a wheel).
2. To disconnect the top and lower returnable springs and to remove them from brake shoes.
3. Using flat-nose pliers, to remove heads of a clamp of a spring of a front brake shoe, pressing and turning them on 90 °.
4. After removal of heads to lift springs, to take pins of a clamp and to remove a block from a brake board.
5. To disconnect a spring of the lever of adjustment and to remove it from a front brake shoe.
6. To disconnect a regulator rack and to remove it from a back brake shoe.
7. Using flat-nose pliers, to remove heads of a clamp of a spring of a back brake shoe, pressing and turning them on 90 °.
8. After removal of heads to lift springs, to take clamp pins, then to disconnect a cable of the emergency brake and to remove a block from the car.
9. To install the lever of the emergency brake on a new brake shoe and to fix it by a new bracket of fastening.
10. To replace all returnable springs irrespective of their state.
11. To remove the end of a fork from a regulator rack and to investigate assembly on wear or damages.

Prevention

The left and right racks are not interchanged. Rack regulator bolts are also not interchanged; the left bolt of a rack has the left carving, and the right bolt the right carving.

12. To raise rubber protective covers of the brake cylinder and to check the working brake cylinder for leak of brake fluid.
13. To clear details of a back brake.
14. To apply lubricant with high temperature of melting on places of contact of blocks with a brake board.
15. To check that the lever of the emergency brake is located opposite to an edge of a back brake shoe and to remove the elastic band fixing pistons in the brake cylinder.
16. To install the top end of a back brake shoe in the piston of the working brake cylinder, then to establish a clamp pin, a spring and to fix a head.
17. To connect a cable of the emergency brake to the lever.
18. To screw a regulator wheel on a bolt so that between a ring and a head of a bolt there was a small gap, to establish a bolt in a rack and to establish a rack into place in a back brake shoe.
19. Rotating the regulator to establish the end of a fork so that the safety lock of a fork (A) was combined with the adjusting lever a front brake shoe, after installation of a block.
20. To install a spring on the regulating lever of a front brake shoe so that shorter hook of a spring connected to the lever.
21. To establish assembly of a front brake shoe on a brake board so that it was combined with a regulator rack fork and that the fork of a safety lock connected to the adjusting lever.
